Beronia Gran Reserva 1973 Cosecha Fundacional has won the accolade of Grand Gold Bacchus at the “Concurso Internacional de Vinos Bacchus” (Bacchus International Wine Competition).
Ollauri, April 2024. The Concurso Internacional de Vinos Bacchus has awarded a Grand Gold Bacchus to Beronia Gran Reserva 1973 Cosecha Fundacional, the first wine made by the Rioja Alta winery. Following several days of tastings, this characterful Rioja was awarded the highest distinction in Spain’s foremost wine competition, the jury for which comprises specialist journalists, sommeliers, winemakers, Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers.
More than 1,900 wines from some of the world’s top wine-producing regions were entered for this last edition of the competition. Only 73 of that number were singled out with a Grand Gold Bacchus, including Beronia Gran Reserva 1973 Cosecha Fundacional. The wine has been made with grapes grown on small plots selected for their low yields, poor soils and orientation that is ideal for optimum ripening. Tempranillo is the primary variety in the wine, complemented by Garnacha, Mazuelo and Viura.
This classic Rioja spent four years in American oak, followed by decades in bottle, where it reached its peak. In the glass it displays a beautiful, attractive brick-red colour, and deep aromas of blackberry and prune infused with wood and garnished with subtle hints of spices. Smooth, complex and balanced on the palate, Beronia Gran Reserva 1973 Cosecha Fundacional is impressively lively.
