D.O.Ca Rioja: a unique enclave for growing vines
Rioja, Lying in the North of Spain, Rioja is undeniably the most famous Spanish wine region, with a global reputation of trust and quality built over 2000 years of winemaking. A paradise for those who, like us, live by and for good wine.
We are intrinsically linked with the long history of our land. We took our name from the ancient Celts known as the ‘Berones’, the former guardians of today’s La Rioja region.
At the heart of la Rioja Alta
Our winery is proudly located in the Rioja Alta sub-region, home to the highest number of century-old wineries in Europe. Tucked in the foothills of the Cantabrian mountains and close to the river Ebro, nature’s influence helps to shape the exquisite character of our fruit.

Unique vineyards
One of the first vineyards to be awarded this certificate by the D.O.Ca. Rioja Regulatory Council, which recognises winegrowing areas that have distinctive, unique features, as geographical areas in their own right.
Climate
Warm Spanish days and soft Mediterranean breezes are followed by dramatically cooler nights. This allows our grapes to ripen slowly and evenly over time, giving them the complexity and structure needed to produce our elegantly complex wines.

The Soil
To walk around la Rioja Alta, with its typical stepped terraces swathed in the ever changing colours of the vines, is to retrace the footsteps of a time-honoured tradition. The structure and variety of these ancient soils have produced unique wines with unrivalled complexity and balance for thousands of years.
Clay-lime
Rich in limestone, these soils stay cool and retain water in the warm Spanish sun, a key factor in the production of wines with great aging potential.
Clay-ferrous
These soils have a distinct reddish hue and plenty of iron, great for the development of the grippy tannins present in Rioja’s finest reds.
Alluvial
Rich in gravel and limestone, alluvial soils help produce lighter wines with distinct fruity characteristics.

Our vineyards in La Rioja
We have over 900 hectares of vines, including organic vineyards and pre-phylloxera rootstock dating back 100 years. Some of these vines are our own, some are tended by the region’s best independent vine-growers, with whom we have worked closely for many years. All are located within 10 kilometres of our winery, ensuring an authentic expression of terroir.
Beronia is committed to sustainable, environmentally friendly agriculture and has a number of certified organic vineyards.
Our
Tempranillo
The hero grape variety of Rioja. Native to the region, tempranillo ripens early and can produce some of the most age-worthy wines.
Graciano
Low-yielding and somewhat of a rare gem in the región, Graciano produces wines with great depth of colour and aroma.
Mazuelo
One of the oldest varieties in the Rioja area, Mazuelo is rich in tannins and acidity, a perfect complement to Tempranillo in a blend.
Garnacha
An ancient Spanish grape variety planted widely around the world. Garnacha needs plenty of warmth and sunshine, abundant in Rioja, to produce its much loved aroma and fresh character.
Viura
Proof that Rioja isn’t just about the reds. Viura produces fruity, floral white wines with crisp acidity.

Our Vineyards in Rueda
We have 65 hectares under vine in Rueda, solely dedicated to the production of our award-winning Verdejo wines. The soils here are free draining and rich in minerals. The vines have to work hard to retain water and as a result they develop a rich and colourful palate of flavours and aromas.
